Mammography Van - Have you seen it?

Support from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, North Jersey affiliate has literally kept the wheels on the bus turning for the UMDNJ/University Hospital Mobile Mammography project.  A long-time grant recipient of the affiliate, University Hospital purchased and equipped a state of the art mobile health van several years ago to provide digital mammograms throughout the SGK-NJ service area.  The van provides services to indigent and underinsured women several days each week, at sites including area health departments, federally qualified health centers, churches, and community centers. Appointments are required, but facilitated by the community agency partners.  The services are made possible through a state supported effort at the Hospital called SAVE.  Further information is available through the SAVE office at (973) 972-0308.

The van also is making a difference to area employers who seek a convenient means of providing on-site mammography services to their employees.  The goal for all served by the project is simple - early detection of life threatening breast cancer.  The van is staffed by a driver/patient registrar, mammography technician, physician and/or physician assistant, and a cancer educator. 

In 2009 the vehicle reached more than 1,650 women, of whom, 240 required further cancer services. In gratitude for support provided by the NJ affiliate, UMDNJ has assumed a major presence at the affiliate’s annual Race for the Cure.  The 2010 UMDNJ team numbered over 340 participants and raised more than $35,000.  Go Team UMDNJ for 2012!
