Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.
Funding Priorities
In 2008, the North Jersey Affiliate began the bi-annual comprehensive Community Needs Profile to ensure grant funds are distributed to community-based programs providing the greatest impact. This profile is now used to guide the local grant application and review process consistent with the Affiliate's mission and standards. The completed Community Profile Report 2009, identified the following priorities:
| Priority 1 | Increase collaboration with other cancer organizations, institutions, businesses, and individuals within the target communities. |
| Priority 2 |
Increase outreach to African American women in Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties through a faith-based approach. |
| Priority 3 | Reduce the number of late diagnoses in Sussex County women with an emphasis on women under 65. |
The North Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® offers grants for innovative projects in the areas of breast health, screening, breast cancer education, treatment support, and outreach projects targeting services not otherwise available to medically underserved women in our service area. Also, all grant recipients must be non-profit organizations targeting breast health services to medically underserved women in our service area.
